The GNU project was started in 1984 by Richard Stallman and is generally considered to be the first Open Source project ever. Without the GNU project, the Open Source Initiative as we know it would not exist at all. The purpose of the GNU project is to produce a free (as in speech, not as in beer) version of the popular Unix operating system. The collection of GNU tools, of which the GNU compiler suite is of unmatched quality and fame, and the Linux kernel together form the base for the GNU Linux operating system. Squirrel Consultancy uses GNU tools whenever possible and we'll be glad to share our experience with you. |
